Thousands stolen in bank card skim scam

Doug Reynolds Jul 29, 2010 13:01:08 PM
Thousands of dollars were stolen from a bunch of people in HRM in the latest debit and credit card scam to hit Metro. Police say this time bank ATMs, specifically CIBC machines, were the target. HRP Constable Brian Palmeter says a 22 year-old Ontario native was arrested Wednesday afternoon at the VIA Rail station. Palmeter says the suspect was carrying a significant amount of cash, different equipment used to obtain data needed to make fake debit cards, pin hole cameras, and bank reading machines. He says they believe a piece of equipment was placed over the PIN pad on ATMs and then small cameras were installed above the unit to capture customers' personal PIN. Palmeter says that's a reminder to the public. "Changing your PIN number and always covering the instrument when you enter your PIN number are two things that can really help reducing the risk of becoming a victim of this type of crime." 22 year old Volodymyr Zozulya is facing a number of fraud related charges and a charge of theft over $5000. A woman was arrested with the suspect, but she was released without being charged.
