On World Cancer Day, the focus is on prevention of the disease

The Canadian Press Feb 04, 2012 10:27:00 AM

TORONTO - Today is World Cancer Day and this year's theme is "Together it is possible."

Every year cancer takes the lives of over seven million people worldwide, and World Cancer Day is designed to draw attention to the profound and universal impact of the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society says last year about 177,800 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer and 75,000 died from the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society says about half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living.

And it advocates policies that protect the health of Canadians, including strategies that combat tobacco use, unhealthy diets, physical inactivity and alcohol consumption.

It has also been fighting for a national catastrophic drug program to ensure Canadians and their families get the care they need, regardless of where they live or how much they earn.
