TORONTO - A three-month-old polar bear cub born prematurely at the Toronto Zoo last year was introduced to the public today.

The male cub was one of three born last Oct. 11 to Aurora, one of the Zoo's two 10-year-old female polar bears.

The new mother rejected the cubs shortly after birth and two of the cubs died of their injuries.

The remaining cub was cared for by Toronto Zoo veterinary and wildlife care staff, has grown from 700 grams to 17 kilograms and can walk on all fours.

Now, the Toronto Zoo is looking for a name for the cub.

Zoo officials say the contest will be open until March 16 and the winning name will be announced on March 31.

The zoo says the cub's eyes and ears finally opened at 30 days and he began teething at about 40 days.

At about 90 days, the cub began to walk and officials say he demonstrated increased strength and co-ordination each day.

"This has been an interesting and challenging case for the zoo and a valiant and dedicated team effort," said John Tracogna, the zoo's CEO.

"Ultimately, it has been a rewarding journey for everyone involved, and we are happy to introduce an active and healthy polar bear cub, our new Arctic ambassador to help share our conservation message with our visitors," Tracogna said.
