SAINT JOHN, N.B.- The RCMP is reminding motorists to buckle up this long holiday weekend in New Brunswick.
The message is simple, seat belts save lives. Only about 10 per cent of New Brunswicker's fail to wear their seat belts, yet they account for 44 per cent of highways deaths.
RCMP Traffic Coordinator, Sergeant Stephane Caron says those numbers should convince anyone to buckle up. "It is the leading contributing factor to the fatalities we have experienced this year and for the past several years".
Caron says Mounties will zero in on seatbelt compliance as they conduct road checks throughout the province but they will also be checking for other motor vehicle infractions.
