HALIFAX, NS- It's simple math, if you spend more than you make, you'll run into trouble but it seems politicians in the Maritimes aren't getting the message.
Fred Bergman is sounding the alarm over spending in the Maritimes.
The APEC senior policy analyst appeared on "The Afternoon News with Tom Young" yesterday to discuss their latest report.
"If the economy rebounds, we could see a tax hike to cover the losses dealt out during the recession," says Bergman.
Bergman says the bottom line is that the Atlantic Provinces need to establish credible, long-term and detailed plans to return to fiscal balance.
He explains that in New Brunswick, up to 41% of total program spending goes towards core areas like health care, and the government needs to address that.
