FREDERICTON - New Brunswickers want to receive more health care services from their pharmacist according to a new survey from the New Brunswick Pharmacists Association.

FREDERICTON – New Brunswickers want to receive more health care services from their pharmacist according to a new survey from the New Brunswick Pharmacists Association.

The survey of eight hundred people conducted earlier this year found 85 per cent of respondents were in favour of their pharmacists delivering urgent, but non-critical care currently delivered by doctors.

“Things like coughs and colds, seasonal allergies, pre-menstrual or menstrual pain, acne, cold sores, skin conditions,” said Association Executive Director Paul Blanchard, citing examples provided. “Fly bites, for example. It’s unbelievable how many people are in the emergency room because their child or themselves have got inflammation due to fly bites.

Blanchard said a new Pharmacy Act is expected to be dealt with by the New Brunswick legislature in the fall.

It is expected to allow pharmacists to deliver expanded services.

FREDERICTON - A full-time public intervener will be created and the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board will be restructured under two pieces of legislation introduced today in Fredericton.

FREDERICTON – A full-time public intervener will be created and the New Brunswick Energy and Utilities Board will be restructured under two pieces of legislation introduced today in Fredericton.

In a release, the government says having a full-time energy public intervener will replace the system of the attorney general appointing private-practice lawyers to represent the public interest in energy-related proceedings before the board.

Instead, a permanent public intervener position will be created within the Office of the Attorney General.

The EUB is composed of two full-time and eight part-time members appointed by the provincial government.

Under the new structure, the board will have five full-time members.

Male peacock wandered away from the zoo over the long weekend

MONCTON, NB – A male peacock which had wandered away from the Magnetic Hill Zoo over the long weekend has been captured.

After trying to locate the bird for several days, zoo general manager Bruce Dougan says the peacock had settled along Indian Mountain Road.

Since the peacocks have free-range at the zoo, Dougan says it’s not that unusual for the male birds to get away.

“On occasion, you’ll get a new young male that will wander. But in the twenty years that we’ve released them at the zoo they’ve always come back because a peacock scream is very, very loud and it carries for miles,” says Dougan.

While the peacock was on the loose, several residents spotted the bird and were even able to get close enough to take pictures of it.
