MONCTON, NB–It was a long and hard fight for firefighters as they battled a blaze at an apartment building at 34 Clearview Street early this morning.

When firefighters arrived just after 1am, Deputy Fire Chief Don McCabe described the scene as chaos, with people hanging out of windows.  Flames could be seen coming from two floors in the four storey building.

Firefighters rescued two people, both who were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.  Another broke his leg when he jumped from the burning building.

McCabe says it was an extremely challenging fire.

“One side of the building is extensively damaged. That was the firefighters challenge.  This fire had burned up through the floor before they even arrived.”

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Several pets perished in the blaze.

The Canadian Red Cross has provided temporary lodging to residents, and also food and clothing to those who needed it.  Others are staying with family and friends.

There’s no word yet on what caused the blaze, but it is believed that it started somewhere on the lower level.
