FREDERICTON, N.B.- The Alward government’s new shale gas regulations are not getting a glowing review from the Conservation Council of New Brunswick.

97 regulations were unveiled last Friday.

Conservation Council spokesperson Stephanie Merrill doesn’t buy the government’s assertion that their regulations are among the strongest around. “We know that this is the common line that governments everywhere like to trot out when they want to be seen as being ahead of the curve”, says Merrill. “We know that everywhere this is happening. It’s just no the case. There are inherent risks to the ondustry”.

Merrill says the Conservation Council has a number of concerns, including it may be the individuals, and not the industry itself, faced with the burden of proof if something goes wrong.
