SHEDIAC, N.B. – The Town of Shediac is looking to more than double its land area if given approval from the provincial government.
The municipality has plans to annex land south of Highway 15 which currently consists mostly of woods, ATV and snowmobile trails east of the Scoudouc River.
Mayor Jacques LeBlanc says the town is one of the most densely populated in New Brunswick, which has its benefits, but it also means they don’t have the room needed to expand.
“It means that we can offer services very efficiently to our citizens, but for future development it creates a situation where we need to expand and make sure that we’re open for the future.”
LeBlanc says they have been consulting with the dozen or so residents that would be affected by the change and he stresses that those residents need not worry about their property taxes rising should the annexation proceed.
The proposal is now in the hands of the provincial government which is expected to make a decision within a month.
