MONCTON, NB – One Moncton city councillor dropped a bombshell last night by announcing his intention to resign his seat in the new year.

When Daniel Bourgeois announced he would be leaving city council, it seemed to take everyone by surprise including the mayor.

In a statement he made only in French, Bourgeois said he has been looking for a job since October and says his role as a councillor is interfering with that job search.

Mayor George LeBlanc says he hopes Bourgeois will reconsider.

“Councillor Bourgeois has obviously been a very engaged… and a good member of council,” noted LeBlanc.

Bourgeois believes he lost a recent job opportunity because of his role as a city councillor.

Bourgeois added he will continue to attend meetings and vote on matters likely until March when he ties up some loose ends.
