FREDERICTON, NB – The head of the New Brunswick Medical Society is weighing in on the amount of money being paid to doctors in the province.
New Brunswick auditor general Kim MacPherson says 16 doctors received more than a million dollars each from medicare last year.
But Anthony Knight says those figures are deceiving.
“It’s not their take home pay. It’s the total revenue for the business that they are running and there are a number of costs that a physician encounters in order to run their practice effectively.”
MacPherson says in some cases, doctors bill both medicare and work-safe-n-b for the same service.
Health Minister Hugh Flemming says he will look into that.
