MONCTON, NB–After three long days of negotiations, the City of Moncton and Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1290 have reached an agreement.  Codiac Transpo buses should be back on the streets within the next few weeks.

The City issued issued a statement after the deal was reached at around 9pm last night.

The two sides will not be making any comments until after they have ratified the deal, and there’s no word yet on the details of the agreement.  Those details are expected to come within the next few days.  Union Head George Turple says its 75 bus drivers and other employees will vote on the deal on Friday.

In a news release, Mayor George Leblanc stated “We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement and we can now work towards providing an improved public transit service to the citizens of Greater Moncton.  It has been a long and difficult labour dispute, but we can now put it behind us.”

He follows up by saying, “I know it’s been a very difficult on people who relied on Codiac Transpo. but we can now start fresh.”

Riders will have to wait another few weeks before they receive service again, because the city says it has to ensure that the buses are safe and roadworthy first.

It has been a long five months for riders who have been without service since June 27th.
