FREDERICTON, NB–The issue of shale gas may cause some tension today as the throne speech is delivered today to open a new session of the legislature.

Premier David Alward says is expected to make a clear statement on the government’s next steps concerning shale gas development.

Meantime,  opponents of the shale gas industry plan to march in front of the legislature in Fredericton today.

Rally and March Organizer Julia Linke says they have a firm message for the Premier.

“What we are really demanding is for our government and Premier Alward to honour his duty to prevent harm and to stop until this industry is proven safe.”   She says,  “Evidence is mounting about the environmental, social and health risks that are associated with this industry.”

Premier Alward believes the industry can be supported if it can be done in a safe and responsible manner.

The economy is also expected to be a big issue in the legislature.  The province is awash in red ink with a ten billion dollar debt and is expecting a $356 million deficit this year.
