MONCTON, NB–A Moncton woman has been sentenced to a two year conditional sentence and 12 months house arrest in connection with the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl last year.
Leticia Skye Chappell appeared in court yesterday for sentencing. She had earlier pleaded guilty to several charges including sexual assault, and abduction for concealing or harbouring the girl.
Chappell was in reportedly in a consensual sexual relationship with the young girl, but the age of consent is 16.
In May of last year, the 13-year-old girl ran away from home, and was missing for two weeks. That prompted a police investigation and search. During the case, the judge heard that the 13-year-old was angry that her parents had forbid her from seeing her 18-year-old girlfriend.
Chappell will also be listed as a registered sex offender for ten years.
Two others were also charged in connection with the young girl’s disappearance.
Chappell’s mother Tammy has been charged with abduction and giving a false statement to police. Jodi Lynn Beaulieu pleaded guilty to abduction and was given conditional sentence and house arrest.
