MONCTON, NB – “Post Carbon Greater Moncton” conducted a one year experiment by setting up an urban farm with four chickens and by growing fruits and vegetables.

The citizens group prepared a report calling it a success and say it’s just one step towards self-sufficiency.

Spokesperson Michel Desjardins says 10 Canadian cities are now “chicken-friendly” and Fredericton is now taking a closer look at it.

“The city (of Fredericton) conducted a survey and out of 1000 respondents, 88 percent said they were in favour of urban chickens.

But Desjardins says the urban farm concept can’t be a free-for-all, noting there must be regulations in place.

Council accepted the report and several councillors seemed receptive to the idea.
