FREDERICTON – The province’s commissioner of official languages wants changes to the Official Languages Act to provide
greater equality of English and French in the province.
In his 2011-2012 annual report, Michel Carrier says the revisions must go beyond maintaining the status quo.
Carrier believes public service senior managers should be bilingual so employees can be supervised in the language of their choice.
He says government action plans contain very few concrete measures that would create a truly bilingual culture within the public service.
Carrier recommends French upgrading courses and suggests designating certain days of the week as “writing in French day.”
He says his office received 203 complaints during the year, most having to do with a lack of public services in French.
