MONCTON, NB – Fire, police and ambulance crews were called out early this morning to deal with an emergency landing at the Greater Moncton International Airport.
Dieppe Fire Chief Charles LeBlanc tells us the flight out of Philadelphia made an unscheduled landing at the airport shortly before 4 a.m. after smelling smoke in the cockpit.
“There were 233 people on board. The aircraft landed safely about 20 minutes after our arrival.” says LeBlanc.
LeBlanc says the smoke turned out to be from an overheated oven inside the aircraft.
One of the passengers was bothered by the smoke and was taken to the hospital to be checked out.
An airport spokeswoman tells us the US Airways flight was bound for Tel Aviv.
Passeners were kept in the plane on the tarmac for several hours, but they were allowed to deplane at around 9:30 this morning.
They are awaiting a replacement flight which will take them to their destination this afternoon.
