MONCTON, N.B. – The Codiac RCMP’s traffic section will be on the lookout this week for cyclists who don’t follow the rules.

Constable Damien Theriault says in response to complaints about cyclists disrespecting traffic rules, RCMP will be conducting a blitz this week.

Theriault says he personally witnessed one case this week where a woman with no helmet was riding her bike on the sidewalk, against traffic, in the dark with no lights, and to top it off, she was texting.

“The poster-person for bad habits on a bicycle.  Those are the types of things that we have to deal with, so we felt a blitz would be appropriate at this time.”

Theriault says many cyclists may not be aware that, like motorists, they are bound by the motor vehicle act and are subject to many of the same fines.

For example, running a red light will run you $172.50 whether you are in a car or on a bike.
