MONCTON, NB – New Brunswick seems to be keeping the door slightly ajar when it comes to a publicly-funded bus service to replace Acadian Coach Lines when it shuts down later this year.

But Premier David Alward admits it may not be possible given the province’s precarious financial position.

“We’re facing some major fiscal challenges and by taking on something else, I don’t know that is in the best interest of our overall capacity when we believe the private sector can be providing that service,” notes Alward.

Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have definitely ruled out a crown-owned bus system.

Alward says he would also consider loosening regulatory barriers for a new bus operator.
