SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Saint John doesn’t seem to be building up.

Statistics Canada says building permits were down in seven provinces in June, with Alberta and British Columbia posting the biggest drops in both non-residential and residential permits.

The Commissioner of Growth and Development for Saint John, Ken Forrest, says building permits are down in Saint John as well.

“Things are down a bit in 2012. Things are down a little bit from what you would expect moving into the construction season. That’s because of the historically high levels of construction that proceeded it. The market has a way of naturally re-balancing itself and that’s what you’re seeing in those numbers.”

Forrest says the numbers for Fredericton were also down but up in the Moncton area.
