MONCTON, NB – Fishermen in the region won’t be starting the lobster season this week as first planned…

The Maritime Fisherman’s Union had asked for a delayed start to the season….and yesterday Federal Fisheries Minister Keith Ashfield had granted their wish.

The opening date of the lobster fishery in  Area 25 will now open on Monday August 13th and will close on October 14th…

Many processing plants have been forced to close in recent days due to protests by lobster fishermen in Southeastern New Brunswick.

Fishermen are upset that a glut of Maine lobster has driven lobster prices down to a point where it’s not viable for them to go out on the water.

They say if the situation isn’t rectified, many of them could end up filing for bankruptcy.

Attempts by the province to broker a deal for the fishermen have been rejected.
