SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The Canada Games Aquatic Centre claims it could lose as much as half its customers when the new YM-YWCA opens in the north end near the end of 2014.

A new pool is planned for the facility which has Aquatic Centre Commission members concerned.

Mayor Mel Norton hopes the two sides can create a win-win situation where the Aquatic Centre can still thrive. “That the Aquatic Centre continues to do the great kind of work it does, the great programming it has, and the competitive environment it creates.”

Area municipalities cover the Aquatic Centre’s annual operating deficit which officials estimate could increase by almost $750,000 if a pool goes in at the “Y”.
