ROTHESAY, N.B. – liberal leadership candidate Mike Murphy is promising New Brunswickers would have a say on the issue of shale gas fracking if he’s elected leader and his party forms the next government.

Murphy says he would introduce an “Environmental Charter of Rights” as well as imposing a moratorium on fracking and putting the controversial issue to a referendum.

Murphy says more information is needed and the technology surrounding fracking is still fairly new. “It’s not a question of regulating it. you can’t regulate something you don’t understand and that no one really understands. The people in Quebec, they brought in a moratorium. The same thing was done in Nova Scotia when they said ‘well we’re not going to do anything, we’re going to wait and see what everyone else does’.”

The leadership convention will be held October 27th in Fredericton.
