MONCTON, NB – Encounters with wildlife are common on the outskirts of the city, but mounties in Moncton were kept busy last night to dealing with a young black bear that was wandering in a neighborhood near the downtown core.

Police and officials from the Department of Natural Resources were called out at around 9 p.m. when bear was spotted wandering near the old garrison grounds on John Street.

There were several sightings of the wayward animal before authorities located it and put it down.

The decision to shoot the animal touched off a storm of controversy in the community.

According to police, the DNR no longer tranquilize animals in urban areas and they had no means of trapping it.
